"For fun, safe and supportive football"THE Eglinton Eels Junior Rugby League Club, Bathurst’s newest junior football club, welcomes any new faces to come and join us in 2012 in a fun and friendly rugby league atmosphere.
The club has grown since its induction in 2010 in which it fielded only a couple of teams in the U6s, 7s and 8s divisions. Shane Earsman, who helped start up the club, said there was a simple reason for its creation.
“When we decided to start the club in 2010 we did it with the goal of creating a safe and family-oriented club for people to join and to give the opportunity to both boys and girls that live a little bit further out of town to learn to play rugby league.
“Since then, the club has continued to grow and we now field teams in a number of junior age groups to give many more keen and young footballers the opportunity to get stuck in and have a go.”
The Eglinton Eels JRL is not, and has never been, about winning footy games. Its focus has always been about having fun, getting fit, learning new skills and learning about being part of a team.
“The kids that have been involved with us since the beginning have simply fallen in love with the club and the environment they play in. They love meeting new people that come through and really have made friends for life,” Shane said.
“We invite all current players and their families, as well as any new faces, to our registration day on February 25 at the Eglinton Sports Ground in which there will be a big barbecue, footy skills activities and a jumping castle; anyone in town is most welcome to join us.”
If you have a keen young footballer who would like to have a run in a safe, friendly and family-oriented environment, pleasecome to the registration or contact Dean Barrie on 0417 204 779 or Shane Earsman on 0416 460 718.
"Exciting year ahead for the Bathurst Bushrangers"
THE completion of the new clubhouse and a new structure in the junior grades is set to make 2012 an exciting year for the Bathurst Bushrangers.
An off-season review by the AFL Central West board has brought some changes to the format of the junior competition. The under 14s will now play on Sunday along with under 12s, under 10s, under 8s and under 6s, a format that should reduce travel and increase games for the junior grades.
Registration for all ages will start on Tuesday, February 14 at 5pm at the new clubhouse on George Park.
If you cannot get there on the day then you can call after 5pm any Tuesday or Thursday and register.
Competition for the seniors will commence on April 14 and this year is already shaping up to be a good one: there have been good numbers already at pre-season training, which is held every Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm.
The reserve grade side is looking forward to defending its title as premiers from last year and first grade is looking to reverse last year’s grand final loss.
"Benefits of playing sport"
WE all know that it can, at times, get dreary for a parent watching their children play sport in Bathurst throughout Winter. The cold snaps seem to get worse and worse each year!
But next time you are out watching your young ones having fun and getting fit in the colder months how about turning your thought to these five points -
n Playing sports is fun. It gives your child something to do and a group to belong to. They have a group of friends that has the same goals and interests.
- Research has found that kids that play sports, especially girls, are more likely to have a positive body image and higher self-esteem. They also are less likely to be overweight.
- Kids involved in sports are less likely to take drugs or smoke because they realise the impact that these destructive activities can have upon their performance.
- Sports help develop teamwork and leadership skills. Kids quickly learn that they have to work together as a team to win the game.
- Motor skills, strategic thinking, and even maths skills are learned by playing sports. Students develop strategic thinking as they figure out plays and the best way to get around a player or score a goal. Maths skills are used as they calculate scores and statistics.
So next time you are out on the sidelines think of all the great benefits your child is getting out of the experience!
