BATHURST played host on Friday afternoon to the mayor of the small town of Wernersville in Pennsylvania, US.
The highlight of the Bathurst stay for Ed Evans and his wife Mary Jane was a drive around the iconic Mount Panorama circuit.
While in Bathurst they spent time with local residents Ted and Janette Kelly of Raglan.
Mr Evans said Wernersville, which is about the size of Oberon, is about 60 miles west of Philadelphia in the heart of Amish country.
He is also in charge of the police in that area.
The couple have been touring since January 5 and have also visited New Zealand.
Mr Evans said that for him the journey has been all about meeting the people of Australia.
“Life is too short not to meet the people,” he said. “Australia has been on my bucket list for many years.
“I don’t know how much life I have left in me, so I’m going to make the most of it.”
The mayor said he has a real love of history and was looking forward to seeing some of Bathurst’s beautiful old buildings.
The couple also enjoyed spending time on the Great Barrier Reef and the Blue Mountains, although cool and rainy weather here in NSW had taken some of the shine off the visit.
The couple have been travelling with Mick Webb, who they met on an overseas tour.
Mr Webb, who lives in the Sutherland Shire, has been friends with Ted Kelly since they were boys.
Mr Evans said he was very much looking forward to his ride around the Mount Panorama circuit because he has a corvette at home.
“I enjoy watching motor racing – NASCAR in particular,” he said.
Ed and Mary Jane also met Bathurst mayor Greg Westman, and compared jobs.
