THE competitors will be flying down Pit Straight on Sunday, but there won’t be a race car in sight.
Rather, the pits at Mount Panorama will be transformed into a riot of colour and feathers as the Bathurst Regional Avicultural Society holds its annual bird show.
Finches, parrots, quails and budgies will be judged and people are encouraged to come along and see the birds.
To raise more interest this year, the club has introduced a decorative bird cage section and more than 20 cages have already been entered.
Society president Ron Weal said they were still taking entries for the bird cages.
“All people have to do is decorate a bird cage and have it at the show on Pit Straight at Mount Panorama by 9am on Sunday,” he said.
“We would love to see more entries and prizes will be given to the best decorative cage.
“There is a lot to see at the annual show, with exhibitors coming from Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle and the Central West. Come and see some of the best birds right here in Bathurst.”
Macquarie Care Nursing Home Bathurst residents have been working on their cages for the past month and have eight entries.
The nursing home’s acting co-ordinator Janet Tustin said this was something different for the residents to do.
“We run art each week and they love birds. We have an aviary here which the residents enjoy,” Ms Tustin said.
“The bird cages they decorated look great.”
The show is free and will run from 10am to 1pm.
“We hope local bird enthusiasts bring their bird along in a decorated cage and the public come and see the birds we have in the region,” Mr Weal said.
