IT may still feel like we’re waiting for summer, but the schools swimming carnival season is well and truly under way at the Bathurst Aquatic Centre.
The aquatic centre was booked to host 15 school
carnivals, starting with St Philomena’s last Friday.
Unfortunately for St Phil’s, bad weather meant they had to make a move to the indoor 25-metre pool.
But aquatic centre manager Oliver Barclay said the weather was kinder for the Cathedral School carnival.
“The first carnival of the year had to be moved indoors,” he said.
“The students didn’t seem to mind and it was a lot better for the spectators.
“We held Cathedral School [yesterday] and they had great weather.
“We were prepared to hold it inside if we had to, but we were lucky the rain stayed away when we needed it to.”
Today it is the Assumption School’s turn to take over the pool, followed by Kelso Public tomorrow and Bathurst Public on Friday.
Mr Barclay said the cooler weather meant it had been a slow pool season, but crowds were still flocking to the centre when the sun came out.
“We were slow, but we have found the second half of the season has been a lot better,” he said.
“The three days of hot weather saw people coming to the pool.”
Bathurst High, Kelso High and MacKillop College will hold their carnivals later in the month and Carenne will host theirs on March 1.
The season will finish with the district carnival for swimmers with a disability on March 8.
