PLANS for a crematorium in Bathurst are now on display at Bathurst Regional Council.
The crematorium will be built, together with a 75-seat chapel, next to the existing Lawn Cemetery.
Councillor Bobby Bourke has been a long-running advocate of a crematorium in Bathurst and said it was good to see the next step being taken.
"It is important that Bathurst have one because it is a major growing city within NSW and we should be providing facilities for all the people in the city and this is something we are lacking at the moment," Cr Bourke said.
"This is so people can rest easy and not have to travel all the way to Orange.
"People don't like talking about death but if I had to I could go and sit in the shopping centre and get thousands of signatures on this.
"People don't like to talk about it so I have been talking for them. I've taken this out of the too hard basket to make sure it gets done."
Cr Bourke has been campaigning almost five years for a crematorium in the city, and he said at more than $1 million it would be no small project.
He said council should make a resolution on the project within six weeks and he could not foresee any objections to the proposal.
"I don't want any more delays. The elderly are asking me about it all the time," he said.
"I feel the only objections for Bathurst putting in a crematorium would not come from people here but the crematorium in Orange."
Mayor Paul Toole said having the plans on public view was an important part of the application process.
"We welcome all public feedback," Cr Toole said.
"I encourage all interested parties to take the opportunity to view the plans while they remain on display at the civic centre."
Plans for the $1.5 million development are on display at Bathurst Regional Council until Monday, March 15.
