TAILS will wag tomorrow as local dogs raise their paws to try Australia’s fastest-growing dog sport, “rally-o”.
A workshop will be conducted by Denison Dog Obedience Club at Eglinton Showground from 9am.
Rally-o, which comes from “rally obedience”, tests agility and obedience.
The sport was formally adopted in Australia in January and, since then, two trials have been held in NSW.
Seasoned dog trainer Pat Connoley and his golden retriever Frosty were among hundreds of entrants to compete in Sydney at the start of the year, achieving top honours at novice level.
The duo has spent the past several months sharing the sport with clubs around the Central West.
“It’s a fun thing for you and your dog to do together,” Mr Connoley said.
“There’s a strong emphasis on interaction and working as a team.
“You’re encouraged to talk to your dog and you can pat your dog, which is different to conventional dog sports.”
A rally-o course has several stations, where handlers instruct their canine counterparts to complete set exercises.
Mr Connoley said the Eglinton-based club was the only dog club west of the Blue Mountains to actively conduct rally-o.
Tomorrow’s interactive display will feature a demonstration as well as time to try the course yourself.
It is open to members, though club president Wendy Ellis said anyone interested in the sport was welcome to come down for a look.
“We’re really excited by this new discipline,” Ms Ellis said.
Rally-o workshops will be conducted at Denison Dog Obedience Club on the second and fourth Saturday each month.
