FOR the second time in as many weeks a young man has been sentenced by the Local Court for dealing in drugs, reinforcing concerns of police and the court that adult drug pushers are recruiting younger men to supply amphetamines and cannabis in Bathurst.
A week after Local Court magistrate, Jan Stevenson jailed a 17-year-old youth for supplying amphetamines and cannabis, she ordered Keiren Moore, 22, to enter a Section 9 good behaviour bond for a year as an alternative to jail over separate drug offences that occurred in August and September last year.
The charges in August followed a police raid on a house in Durham Street where 2.1 grams, 1.4 grams and 1.1 grams of amphetamines in plastic bags had been discovered in a freezer, the 2.1 grams Moore said belonged to him with the remainder owned by the co-accused adult yet to appear before Bathurst District Court.
Moore’s co-accused was one of two men associated with the teenager jailed for nine months, with a non parole four months.
The raid executed by detectives with a warrant also uncovered 58.9 grams of cannabis in a backpack that Moore claimed belonged to him, saying he intended to smoke the cannabis with friends.
During the search of the house police said Moore admitted selling drugs, including one startling revelation that he’d “been paid $120 for amphetamines two days earlier, water, Epsom salts and sugar”– sold to deceive a buyer.
Ms Stevenson placed Moore of Bilmann Place, Windradyne on good behaviour bonds taking into account his guilty pleas and the fact he sought to rehabilitate from addiction to amphetamines, methylamphetamines known as ice, cannabis and ecstasy by attending the Magistrate’s Early Referral Into Treatment Program, directing drug offenders into effective drug treatment.
The magistrate made it a condition of the bond that Moore be supervised by Probation and Parole Services and accept guidance in drug, alcohol and psychological counselling and take medication as advised.
Acting police prosecutor, Sergeant Keith Ridley tendered statements of facts relating how Moore had been on bail on the two counts of possession and two counts of supply when found with 1.2 grams of cannabis and 1 gram of amphetamines in his pocket while walking in Hawkins Place, West Bathurst in September.
Police who stopped Moore asked if he had drugs in possession.
When Moore said he had no drugs, police searched him and found a satchel containing the amphetamine and a foil of cannabis.
Moore had been in breach of bail conditions that stipulated he not drink alcohol or take drugs or associate with two co-accused men.
He had been found at Booth Street in January with the man due to appear in District Court and in Bassett Drive with a bottle of Johnnie Walker in December, the court heard.
