IN a city synonymous with Holden and Ford, it’s not often you see a Rolls Royce for sale.
But that’s exactly what’s parked at the front of the lot of Dean’s Quality Cars in Stewart Street.
The car, once owned by royalty, is on consignment, owned by an Orange-based enthusiast who is downsizing his collection.
Dealer principal with Dean’s Quality Used Cars, Sam Farraway, said the 1981 Silver Spirit had generated enormous interest since being placed on the lot two weeks ago.
Most of the interest has come from people interested in using the Rolls Royce as a hire car for weddings.
Mr Farraway said the car, with 50,000 kilometres on the clock and all its service books, was once owned by the Prince of Singapore.
Dean Sanders, who owns the car lot, said it was incredibly unusual for a car of this calibre to be for sale in Bathurst.
“I’ve been in the industry for 20 years and never sold a Rolls Royce before now,” he said. “You just don’t see them in Bathurst.”
Despite the car’s age, Mr Sanders described the “Roller” as the ultimate in luxury.
“It just floats along,” he said.
Mr Farraway agreed.
“It’s got front seats like leather recliners, and when you’re driving over bumps you don’t feel a thing,” he said.
With a 6.8 litre V8 engine, the Roller is heavy on fuel, and maintenance is pricey.
Still mr Farraway said the Rolls Royce is probably worth a lot more than the asking price of $29,990.
“We’ve put it out there to see what happens,” he said.
As a new car, the Silver Spirit went for around 100,000 pounds or $200,000 in today’s prices, and was the preferred choice of transport for British royalty and politicians alike.
This particular vehicle was originally sold to a consulate in Hong Kong, and was especially ordered with a gold bonnet mascot instead of the standard silver one.
In the current model of the car, when the iginition turns off, the mascot drops down into the car’s radiator.
