The Western Advocate lost a good friend last night with the death of Peter Veness.
Peter died peacefully at 7.20pm at a Canberra hospice after a three-year battle with a rare form of brain cancer. He was just 27.
Pete was a journalist with the Western Advocate from 2004 to 2006 and was well-known in Bathurst for his no-nonsense approach. But he was also quick with a laugh and loved to tell a story.
More recently he has been a popular member of the Canberra press gallery, filing stories for AAP even as he continued his battle with brain cancer.
Pete's parents, David and Cheryl, are well-known in Bathurst and were at his bedside last night, along with his wife Bec.
No funeral arrangements have been announced so far.
Peter wrote about his struggle with cancer in 2009. Read his inspiring words here.
