The free training program, called Mental Health First Aid, recognises the valuable role that the community plays in supporting a person who is experiencing mental health issues.
Greater Western Area Health Service Mental Health Promotion Coordinator, Meg Simpson said the Mental Health First Aid course is just like other first aid course.
"It is delivered by accredited instructors and will increase the participant's knowledge, skills and confidence in being able to provide help to family, friends, work colleagues and the general community.
"It is a two-day course which is relevant to everyone, because mental health problems are common," she said.
Ms Simpson said about one in five Australian adults will suffer from a mental health problem in any year and many people don't recognise mental health issues or know how to help.
Carers and family members of people who have a mental illness are particularly encouraged to attend.
"It will cover issues including depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder," she said.
"Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of these mental health problems, where and how to get help and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective."
"While people often know a lot about common physical health problems, many people know very little about mental health problems. Lack of knowledge and ignorance adds to stigmatising attitudes and prevents people from seeking help early and seeking the best sort of help," Ms Simpson said.
She said the Mental Health First Aid Program has been found to be effective in improving mental health literacy, reducing stigma and helping behaviours.
It will be held at the HACC Centre, 55 Seymour Street on Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28. Attendance is required on both days.
