This big puppy is the world’s biggest model guide dog and is named Gulliver.

He is touring the Central West this week to recognise the big role Guide Dogs NSW plays across the region.

Karen Warwick, an orientation and mobility instructor who works in Bathurst, said Gulliver was in town to raise awareness of the good work Guide Dogs NSW does.

“Over the past year, our team has provided nearly 340 free orientation and mobility programs for Central West residents who have limited or no sight,” Ms Warwick said.

“While we are known for our guide dogs, most of our programs teach people how to safely and independently get from A to B. This could involve someone learning how to use a long cane, an electronic aid like a miniguide that vibrates when close to objects, your remaining vision, or of course a guide dog.”

In the last three months, the Central West Guide Dogs team has more than doubled the number of programs it has delivered compared to the same time last year, after two new instructors came on board in July.

“We have strengthened our team to ensure that people with impaired vision across the region have better access to free services that help them to be independent,” Mrs Warwick added.

Colin Shawcross has been legally blind since birth and his best friend is his loyal guide dog, Tait.

“I’ve had him for seven years and he’s nine years old,” Mr Shawcross said.

“He gives me total independence. He takes me places and I don’t have to rely on anyone else. Seven days a week, 24 hours a day he gives me independence and mobility.”
