If you see a small car mounted with a camera driving around the streets of Bathurst over the next couple of weeks you will know your neighbourhood is set to make an internet appearance on Street View, a feature of the popular Google Maps.
This is the second visit to Bathurst by the Street View car or, as some like to call it, the Googlemobile.
Over the next two months a fleet of street view cars will visit every road in Australia. Yesterday they were in lower Durham Street.
A Google spokesperson said it generally takes a few months to cover a large city and a few days to a few weeks for smaller centres.
She said South Bathurst was missed during the Street View car's last visit to Bathurst so that will be a priority this time around.
"We aim to cover all the streets we missed on the previous occasion," she said. Areas previously visited will also be re-photographed to keep the images up to date.
The spokesperson said each driver has a map in the vehicle showing the various routes. The cameras mounted on the vehicles take photos as they go. Those photos are then taken away for processing and within three to six months will have been uploaded to Google Maps.
The spokesperson said Street View aims to help internet users view and navigate 360 degree street level imagery of the country's towns, cities, regions and remote areas.
"Street View has been one of our most used and talked about Google Maps features," she said. "It is most useful when the imagery is up to date and reflective of what you'd see if you visited an area in person. The images we are collecting this time will be crisper and the face blurring technology more accurate."
