Happy with his Howick Street home

08 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
PAUL Toole’s on the move.

The Bathurst MP has relocated from the State Government office block in William Street to new digs in Howick Street, next to Centrelink.

It’s a change of scenery that will cost about $45,000 a year, but according to Mr Toole it’s turned out to be a win-win situation.

He said each year the government allows five or six of its MPs to move to new premises.

“Some of the government departments in the office block where I was based needed more space,” Mr Toole said.

“My offices were way too small for the ever-increasing demands of the job and were really not suitable anymore.

“They were actually about half the size of most other offices that MPs have.

“Because of the chance of any conflict of interest in the search for new premises the task is taken out of the MP’s hands. All the negotiating is done from Macquarie Street.”

Mr Toole said the government foots the bill for his office space of about 130 square metres.

“We wanted a high profile location which had easy access and I think we found it,” he said. “There’s an interview room, administration areas, my office and room for filing and storage.

“I think it’s good value for money. Certainly, there are a lot of offices in and around the central business district that are much more expensive to rent.

“The building is a Bruce Bolam development which has included the renovation of the original property, which has been carried out with great sympathy to the streetscape.”

Do the Government Departments left in the state office block really need more space or is it simply the case of Mr

Toole being too close to many public sector employees, many who have been vocal about the current governments wages policy.

That office served our previous member well for many years so why pay rent

I am sure the old offices suited Gerard Martin fine, because they were buried deep within the bowels of the concrete bunker that is the State Office block.

By relocating to a more prominent location, Paul Toole and is office is now more accessible to his electorate.

This reflects more an attitude towards openness than cowardice, hiding away out of sight and out of mind.

People may grudge about the cost, but things believe it or not, do cost money. Is it not better for us to invest in the democratic institutions which like it or not form the basis for our system of governance?

"...great sympathy to the streetscape" ... right up until the horrible political signage was plastered across it.

Am longing for the day when shop signange has to be held to some sort of aesthetic standard... I don't mind TMs and logos, but surely they can be more tastefully displayed?

Should be plenty of room in the Govt Office Block at the rate Toole's mob are wiping out the public service in country areas.

"Mr Toole said the government foots the bill". Paul, didn't you mean the tax payer?

Wow, thats a lot of tax payers money wasted on rent. Many real businesses that actually make money cannot even affort that sort of rent. Shows that Toole is not in touch with the real community.

I thought there were renovations done before Paul took up residence in the old office. How much did that cost the taxpayers as well?

Quite a few vacant shops in Bx & Kelso that would be large enough & a lot less than $45000.

Corner of Sydney Rd & Boyd St for starters ... great lunch across the road at Kelso Pub as well!

He likes to advertise... he's got the car with signage as well.

Why would Paul Toole want to be more prominent!

He would be better hiding so as not to be attacked for the many bad decisions being made by his big boss in Macquarie Street.

We thought the previous government was bad but the present mob are no different.

Has anyone had any foster care issues of late?
