When the starting gun sounds in the Gold Coast Half Ironman Triathlon on Sunday morning there will be 16 Bathurstians racing for a reason.
They are all members of the King Cain Bathurst Wallabies Triathlon Club and have set themselves a target of $10,000 for the local cancer care facility.
It’s a tribute to the club’s willingness and desire to support the local community. While the local lads will be going through their own kind of pain at Calypso Bay on their big day, according to the Whiskas for a Wish organiser Ryan Sargent, that’s nothing compared to the ordeals suffered by people with cancer.
“For the past few months we’ve been out in the community asking people to kick the can for Daffodil Cottage,” he said. “The boys have been growing beards and moustaches as a demonstration of their efforts and I can’t emphasise what great support we’ve received.
“We approached Greg Brimble of Clancy Motors in Bathurst and he didn’t hesitate to get behind the Daffodil Cottage cause because they, like us, know how important it is to be part of the wider local community.
“The team from out at Mars also came to the party, hence the Whiskas for a Wish slogan.”
Mr Sargent said there isn’t a person in the region who hasn’t been touched in some way by cancer.
“From our point of view popular Wallaby Richard Hobson lost his mum to cancer recently and her battle motivated us to do something for Daffodil Cottage,” he said.
According to Nick Lander from the Wallabies they will go very close to reaching their target.
“We’re just about there,” he said. “But when we return from the Gold Coast we will be chasing up commitments from many people to the cause.”
Mr Lander, who will compete his first Half Ironman Triathlon on Sunday, is looking forward to the challenge of completing a 1.9km swim, 90km bike leg and 21km run.
“There’s a lot of us who have never attempted this distance before,” he said. “There’s the fear of the unknown, but there’s also the excitement of the immense challenge this type of event presents.
“We’re not short of motivation. Knowing we’re racing for Daffodil Cottage will take care of that.
“Anyone who wants to come on board and help us can contact either Ryan Sargent on 0418 254496 or Terry Roberts at Metalco on 6332 5200.
“All donations of $2 or more will be fully tax deductible,” he said.
