Judicial offices come and go

29 May, 2009 08:04 AM
THE Office of the Public Trustee is to move from Sydney to Bathurst, but will not be located in the offices previously occupied by the Director of Public Prosecutions in the Bathurst State Office Block.

Member for Bathurst Gerard Martin said yesterday he understood the Public Trustee and Protective Commissioner’s offices that would merge to open in Bathurst would be working from a shop front to deal with the public in the region.

Mr Martin said he was not aware the DPP might still have 18 months of a lease to run on office space in the State Office Block.

He said he was not aware or concerned about reports the relocation of departments in the offices of Public Guardian – Public Trustee or Protective Commissioner – had been intended for Orange, where the office may have been better suited.

“The offices are coming to Bathurst,” Mr Martin said. “The decision has been made, I know nothing about mention of the suitability of Orange.”

Meanwhile, the Attor-ney-General’s Department has confirmed it played no part in the decision to close the Bathurst office.

“The [office of the DPP] manages its own resources and is in charge of how it distributes those resources around the state,” a spokesman said.

I have my Will with the Public Trustee and this is the first news I have seen about a merger. What's going on? Why are clients kept in the dark about this merger? When was this merger decided? The decision to open an office in Bathurst looks like a political stunt that is meant to improve Mr Martin's reputation. Orange is held by the Nationals, and Dawn Fardell in Dubbo is an Independent. The community is being ripped-off just to save a Labor mate's seat. Orange hospital has a huge mental health facility while Bathurst hospital only has 10 beds for psychiatric patients. This is unfair.
