Kids blast off to healthy habits

19 Aug, 2008 09:42 AM
Students at South Bathurst Public School have thrown themselves into a competition designed to encourage them to eat more fruit and vegetables.

The Blast Off and Win promotion by Sydney Markets encourages healthy eating habits in children.

Each time a student buys a piece of fruit they get a sticker token. Once they have four sticker tokens they win a minor prize.

All completed entries are sent to Sydney Markets to go into the draw for a ticket to Hong Kong Disneyland.

Canteen co-ordinator Donna Hollis said the canteen has been offering lots of extra treats including fruit trifles, fruit kebabs, chocolate dipped fruit and fruit and jelly.

"We can't keep the fruit up to them," she said.

"They are very competitive. It's great.

"We are hoping that once the competition is over they will still be interested in fruit."

The competition will run for nearly a month.

Ms Hollis said she has some great parent volunteers helping with the considerable preparation needed to make the fruit attractive to students.

Not surprisingly the chocolate dipped fruit was the favourite treat.
