V8 Supercars star Craig Lowndes and Audi team-mate Warren Luff took time away from preparing for tomorrow’s Bathurst 12 Hour to share some golden advice.
“We’re all passionate about the road safety side of what we do,” five-time Bathurst 1000 winner Lowndes said. “We explained to the kids all the stuff we’ve got in the car – the roll cage, race suits, helmets; the things you don’t have on the public roads.
“Our main emphasis was on vision and being aware of your surroundings.”
Those will be two things Lowndes will undoubtedly use when he tackles the Mount tomorrow with Luff and Australian GT Championship regular Mark Eddy in the Audi R8 LMS.
“It’s definitely exciting any time I get to come back here to race,” Lowndes said. “We’ll see how the weather presents itself on Sunday. But we’re pretty comfortable.”
Yesterday’s five-hour learner driver session began at 8am. Local school students took part in a driving simulator session, an introduction to driving technique in static vehicles and a braking technique demonstration.
Instructors then conducted demonstration laps of the Mount Panorama circuit at normal road speed.
Bathurst High student Michael Coles said he was excited to grasp the opportunity to learn at the Mount before meeting Lowndes.
“We learnt about proper steering control, braking technique, the correct posture to have in a car,” the 16-year-old said. “It was great.”
