Lighting the way to curb alcohol-related violence

Work on the second stage of a $250,000 council project to upgrade security lighting in Machattie Park will begin within the next two to three weeks.

Lighting has already been installed around the rotunda as part of the three-year project.

The new work will focus on the William Street side of the park and is expected to take six to eight weeks to complete, while a third stage in the George Street area will begin next year.

A survey just released shows most Australians believe there is a direct link between increased binge drinking and increased alcohol-related violence.

Following the release of these figures by Roy Morgan, the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation is urging people to ask their local council how it plans to curb alcohol-related violence.

People in Bathurst are also being urged to submit their ideas on how Prime Minister Kevin Rudd can tackle this crisis.

All ideas submitted will be passed on to the prime minister by Tim Costello, who is a director of the Alcohol Education Rehabilitation Foundation.

Chairman of the local ongoing crime prevention committee, Councillor Warren Stocks, said Bathurst Regional Council has a very strong relationship with police and hoteliers and is always looking for ways to improve community safety.

Cr Stocks said council has taken a number of measures to reduce anti-social behaviour, including education programs.

He said Machattie Park and Kings Parade are already alcohol free zones with Peace Park also set to become one.

Russell Street's secure taxi rank, which operates on the weekend is another measure to combat alcohol fuelled violence.

Another safety measure will be the installation of additional security lighting in the RSL carpark at a cost of $60,000.

"We anticipate there will be more and more people using that carpark with the closure of the IGA carpark," Cr Stocks said.

Cr Stocks said the crime prevention committee is made up of representatives from police, the Department of Community Services, the Department of Housing and the local domestic violence group.

"It is a good cross representation from a number of agencies," Cr Stocks said.
