THE Bathurst Airport lighting system will soon be upgraded, with Bathurst Regional Council letting a $454,000 contract to Bathurst firm Siegert Electrical Pty Ltd to carry out the work.

Director of engineering Doug Patterson said the work would involve the replacement of all existing runway and taxiway lighting.
“The existing runway lighting was installed in the late 1960s, which makes it one of the oldest systems still in operation,” he said.
“A Precision Approach Path Indicator will be installed at both ends of the main runway.
“This will assist pilots acquire and maintain the correct approach to the airport.
“The work will also involve installation of a back-up power supply.”
Mr Patterson said the work would comply with Civil Aviation Safety Authority regulations and would improve safety and lighting and operational safety at the airport.
“Basically, the current system is past its use-by date,” he said.
“The new lighting system, which involves more than eight kilometres of electrical cable and conduit, will be pilot-activated.”
Work on the new installation, which is expected to take up to eight weeks, will begin in February.
