RAIL Action Bathurst is calling on the State Government to fund an independent feasibility study on re-establishing a Bathurst – Sydney direct rail service.
Bathurst Rail Action Group chairman John Hollis met with Rail Corp last week to discuss results of an independent community survey carried out in Bathurst in August and September.
Mr Hollis said the survey showed Bathurst was "overwhelmingly supportive" of the idea of a Bathurst to Sydney rail link. Mr Hollis said the executive summary shown to Rail Corp said 1830 people were surveyed over August and September.
"Their response was enthusiastic support."
The survey also showed that more people travel from Bathurst to Sydney by private car.
Twenty per cent of respondents drove by private car to Lithgow to catch the electric train while 34 per cent of survey respondents said the current coach/ train set up was a deterrent to using public transport.
Mr Hollis said the action group was now demanding an independent feasibility study to be undertaken by the government .
"Regional areas need to be part of the State Government infrastructural development. At the moment the focus is solely on Sydney.
"People living in regional areas need equity of access to commuter services, and again this is not happening," he added.
Mr Hollis said the group would maintain communication between Railcorp to keep pressure on the government for change.
"It will be interesting to see how the Minister moves. He knows we're here, it's a case of the squeaky wheel gets the oil," he said.
