The Bathurst Menshed opened yesterday as a number of members got to work converting the old scouts hall in Havannah Street.
But despite the low-key launch, president and project manager David Buckby said it was exciting to have the shed up and running.
“Mensheds is a uniquely Australian organisation specialising in the needs of men, their health and wellbeing,” Mr Buckby said.
Mr Buckby said the Bathurst Menshed would aim to develop and share skills among the members in order to promote self worth, create companionship and to benefit both the individual and the community.
“The Menshed will address issues such as men’s health - emotionally and socially - within the community by providing support in areas including hobbies,” he said.
“It will also be a place to be able to chat over a cup of tea and be able to address relevant issues.”
The Bathurst Menshed already has 50 members who are planning a number trips away in coming weeks.
“Right now we are just having a few working bees to get the centre right,” Mr Buckby said.
“But we should be doing a bus trip away in the next few weeks to Cowra and surrounding areas.”
Mr Buckby added the Bathurst Menshed was still seeking sponsorship from corporate enterprises and different levels of government.
“We would like to thank Peter Rogers Real Estate, East Bathurst Rotary Club, Fish and Sons, Coyotes Cafe, the Lane Cove Menshed, Steve Anderson Building Consultants and the Western Advocate for their support and sponsorship,” he said.
“Without their help this project would not have been possible.”
The Bathurst Menshed is located at 140 Havannah Street and will be open Mondays and Fridays from 9am to midday and on Wednesdays from 2pm until 5pm.
