With help from her mum, the Perthville student went door to door, set up stalls in her local shopping centre and asked people on the streets if they would like to donate to the cause.
“I just want to raise enough money to buy a wheelchair for someone with MS,” Kayla said.
In the past three years, Kayla has raised an incredible $15,796.
NSW State Manager for the MS Readathon, Maxine Compton, said MS is a chronic and sometimes debilitating disease that does not just affect those living with it but also their families and carers.
“Without the support of families like Kayla’s, we cannot do what we do, which is to support people living with multiple sclerosis,” Maxine said.
“For Kayla, who has no direct association with MS, to raise so much money is a tremendous effort.”
Kayla, who next year wants to be the state’s top fundraiser, said it was a big task to achieve this year’s result.
“We went around different businesses and asked if they wanted to donate,” Kayla explained.
“And everyone was fantastic, people were incredibly supportive,” her mum, Sue, added.
Kayla said she thanked everyone who supported the cause and hoped people would get on board next year as she aims to be the number one fundraiser.
“Harvey Norman, Keppel Street Meats, The Good Guys, South Bathurst Butchers, Annie’s Ice Cream, IGA, the Perthville Pub and Stumpy’s on Stewart were all big supporters,” she said.
Kayla is already looking for corporate support to help reach next year’s goal. Businesses interested in supporting Kayla can contact her mother Sue on 0419 843 164.
