ONE devoted local fan is so thunderstuck with AC/DC that he is planning on joining their Rock and Roll Train and following them to every single concert when the band starts its Black Ice Tour tomorrow.
And with tickets for each of the 11 shows priced at at least $99 each, the tour is certainly not going to be Done Dirt Cheap for this groupie.
Volker Janssen said he was born and raised in Germany and introduced to the AC/DC music as a nine-year-old in 1980. "My parents were attending a party with us ... a friend of mine [who was 11 at the time] took me aside and said 'You gotta listen to this, mate', then played the If You Want Blood album," Mr Janssen, also known by as Dr Acca Dacca, said.
"I was hooked from the first chords of Riff Raff. Such enormous energy and you just couldn't help tapping your feet, banging your head and playing the air guitar. We played the record over and over again, especially Whole Lotta Rosie, which to this day continues to be my favourite song of all time.
"I asked my friend to tape all of his AC/DC records so I could get more of this damn fine band."
Dr Acca Dacca's collection has grown over the years and includes records, singles, bootlegs, magazine snippets and anything else he could get his hands on.
"At school I was known as the guy who only wears AC/DC T-shirts," he said. My grandma was busy sewing patches onto my jeans vest to turn it into a true AC/DC fan jacket. I'm proudly wearing it to this day," he said.
Mr Janssen's first concert was live in Essen in Germany during the Blow Up Your Video tour in 1988. "It was an amazing experience and the first of many more gigs ... Once you've tasted blood, you want more," he said.
"My parents were rather shocked when they picked me up ? drenched in sweat, hardly able to speak with a big smile on my face and a trance-like look in my eyes.
"I quickly realised that one show was just not enough, so saw nine gigs during the Razor's Edge tour in 1991. I even found a hairdresser who was game enough to carve the AC/DC logo into the back of my head."
He loved it so much he did it again in 1996 during the Ballbreaker tour. Over two months he saw 18 shows in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and England.
Mr Janssen came to Sydney in 1994 as an international exchange student and fulfilled his mission to visit Bon Scott's final resting place in Fremantle. After finishing his degree in Surveying at the University of Bonn in Germany, he returned to Sydney in 1998 to start studying a PhD on using Global Positioning System (GPS) observations for volcano deformation monitoring in Indonesia.
After more visits to Europe, Dr Acca Dacca has clocked up more than 50 live gigs and once he has finished with the Aussie tour as well as more in France and Germany in June, he will have a personal tally of 68 live shows. "AC/DC is simply the best hard rock band ever and the ultimate way to experience them is live," he said.
