Although the playground has not opened yet, it is expected to attract sufficient patronage to require a significant area for parking.
Bathurst Regional Council is looking at two options - one with an estimated cost of $65,000 and another with a price tag of $60,000.
The council Director of Engineering Services Doug Patterson has recommended council monitor demand for parking at the playground and refer the construction of an off street car park to the 2010/2011 Management Plan for consideration. Councillors will vote on these recommendations at Wednesday’s meeting of council.
The first option would include providing 45 degree angle rear to kerb on-street parking in Hope Street. Hope Street currently has 32 parallel car parking spaces available but with an adjustment to kerb lines 52 rear-to-kerb spaces could be made available. This would result in an increase of 20 parking spaces.
The second option would involve the construction of an off -street car park within the grounds of Victoria Park in the vicinity of the temporary helipad. Thirty four car spaces could be accommodated without the need to remove any established trees. “The new facility will require parking but the patronage and requirement for parking is not currently known,” Mr Patterson said.
Parking available adjacent to the park includes around 90 on-street car spaces in Durham, Hope and Howick streets and 151 spaces in the off-street parking area adjacent to the John Matthews Tennis Centre and the council depot off Durham Street.
