Chifley Command police have been trained in safe use of Taser stun guns, officer in charge Inspector Chris Davey said yesterday.
Inspector Davey was commenting on the first police use of a Taser to subdue an aggressive young man who ran amok in Bathurst recently and appeared before the Local Court on Monday [below].
Gary Milton, 21, had been drinking cask wine before he used the head of his 18-year-old girlfriend to smash holes in a wall of her home in Rocket Street, Bathurst.
Milton had either headbutted or kicked in five walls of the house and pulled a door off its hinges, causing more than $3,000 worth of damage.
“The Taser had been used as it had been meant to be used, according to police policy and guidelines,” Inspector Davey said.
“It achieved what was intended with safety to the public and police, by police trained in use of the Taser.”
Last month Premier Nathan Rees announced that $10 million would be spent in the Budget to issue Tasers to 1962 frontline police officers across the state.
