A partnership between Quota, local police and schoolchildren, the QuoCKa Reading Program is a community service designed to increase the literacy skills and love of books for children from kindergarten to year 3.
It also builds a sense of community spirit among those involved, according to Quota’s local QuoCKa co-ordinator Noelene Phillips.
“Not only does each child involved in the program receive their own books, books are also donated to the school library and the children have someone to read to them each week,” she said.
“Quota co-ordinates the program and provides the books for the kids and the volunteers are sourced from our members, police officers, retired teachers, university students and anyone who wants to get involved to enjoy this very unique and beneficial project.”
Mrs Phillips said QuoCKa will be expanding in 2012.
“We will be working with the teachers and students at Bathurst South Public School as well as the schools who have been participating in the program for the past two years,” she said.
“Any schools not involved in the QuoCKa program are urged to join the fun and can do so by phoning 6331 2270.”
