For the first time in many years the people of Bathurst can look forward to the excitement of a big New Year’s Eve bash complete with fireworks.
The family friendly celebration will take place at the city’s new adventure playground, which Mayor of Bathurst Paul Toole describes as the ideal location.
Cr Toole said while the celebration is still just a concept at this stage, money has been set aside for it in council’s budget.
“There has been a lack of New Year’s Eve celebrations in Bathurst over the years and Bathurst Regional Council has decided to rectify this,” he said.
“I’m really looking forward to it.
“I think it will be a great thing for the community.
“It’s a wonderful chance for everyone to come together and reflect on the year past and celebrate the coming of the new year.”
Cr Toole said the details are still being worked out, but the festivities should begin at around 6pm.
People are invited to bring their rugs and picnic baskets, however, a barbecue will also be in operation.
The mayor said children will be able to make full use of the adventure playground and there will also be other activities including jumping castles, music and possible live feeds from the celebrations in Sydney. Giveaways could include glow sticks, party hats and sparklers.
Cr Toole said the highlight of the night will be a fireworks display complete with countdown at around 9.15pm.
“The fireworks will be held early to allow those with young children to get the little ones off to bed before it gets too late,” he said.
“People will also have time to get to another venue to see in the new year at midnight.”
In the coming months council will be seeking sponsorship to cover the cost of the fireworks and inviting local businesses to help with sponsoring other activities.
Cr Toole said he would welcome suggestions from the community about how council can make the night one to remember. Ideas can be dropped in to the council chambers.
“We would really like to see this event grow over time so people don’t feel they have to go to Sydney and other places to celebrate New Year’s eve,” he said.
