A 29-YEAR-OLD Bathurst man is facing at least seven years’ gaol after being found guilty by a Bathurst District Court jury on Wednesday of a glassing assault which left a 16-year-old Lithgow youth blind in one eye.
After the jury verdict Crown Prosecutor Max Pincott opposed bail, saying Adam Troy Dove faced a seven-year standard non parole period “for a very serious matter for which gaol would inevitably follow”.
The maximum sentence for the offence of causing grievously bodily harm with intent is 25 years.
Judge David Frearson called for a pre-sentence report and remanded Dove in custody until September 10 for sentence.
Dove was found guilty of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to Lithgow teenager Shane Southall who said it would be a battle to save his damaged eye.
Accompanied by his mother to Bathurst to hear the verdict handed down the now 17-year-old said outside Bathurst Court House he had not made any plans for his future or a career. His mother and members of his family said it was possible Mr Southall would have to have his left eye removed.
Dove had at the start of the trial pleaded guilty to recklessly causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Southall at a 21st birthday party in Hamley Street, South Bathurst on May 17 last year.
Mr Southall told the jury he’d been under age and not drinking alcohol when he and his girlfriend attended her sister’s 21st birthday. Dove made a remark to Mr Southall’s girlfriend then wanted him to go outside to fight.
Mr Southall said Dove forced the beer glass into his left eye. Even though it had been dark, he saw Dove with the glass in his right hand when he thrust it into his face.
Mr Southall suffered a penetrating wound to his eye, lacerations to his face, mouth and lips, his teeth were moved out of place and some teeth were loosened.
