A coven of excited teenage girls turned out to see the latest film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga, ecstatic about the bloodsucking vampire story’s return to the screen.
The sequel, ‘New Moon’, sold more than 530 tickets on opening night at Metro Cinemas, where they hosted a screening of the first film ‘Twilight’, which was released late last year, before the midnight premiere of the new movie.
Bathurst Metro Cinema manager Mark Hewitt said the teen movie attracted hundreds of teenage ‘Twihards’, who lined up for hours prior to the screening.
“There were people lined up from the cinema door right down to the entrance and around the corner,” he said.
“So far for Friday and Saturday night, we’ve sold over 150 tickets easily.”
Mr Hewitt said the film has the potential to be bigger than any of the internationally acclaimed Harry Potter movies, which were hugely successful.
“If we don’t sell 8000 to 9000 tickets in the first two weeks, it would be a disappointment,” he said.
Plenty of people found it well worth their while being one of the first to see the latest blockbuster, including die-hard fan Cassandra Bateman.
“It was fantastic,” she said.
“There was so much action and now I can’t wait to see the next one.”
“It was so much better than Twilight,” she said.
Cassandra’s mother, Joanna, who had not read Meyer’s novels, said she will now make the effort and can’t wait for the next instalment.
“It ended on a cliffhanger, so now I just can’t wait to see the next one and I’m definitely going to be reading the books,” she said.
