THERE should be one very nervous vandal walking the streets of Bathurst.
That’s the message from local police and Sue Cregan from the Keppel Street Newsagency.
This follows the late night attack on the entrance to the local business at about 11.30pm on Tuesday.
Police are in the process of taking an image of the man believed to be responsible for the crime. which was captured on closed circuit television (CCTV).
According to Mrs Cregan, their video shows the culprit walking up and down outside the newsagency just after 11pm.
“He then came back with a long stick, a bit like a broom handle, and got stuck into the front door,” she said. “The glass was smashed before the alarm went off and the chap was last seen running up Keppel Street.
“The person was about 19 years old and was wearing a blue cap and sloppy joe with a hood. Hopefully police will be able to release an image from the CCTV which will help them in their investigations.”
Mrs Cregan said this senseless act cost the business about $500.
“It’s hard enough to run a small business without having to put up with this type of thing,” she said. “You couldn’t print what I was thinking when the security company rang us on Tuesday night.
“Really, what was to be gained by smashing the front door. Vandalism isn’t generally a problem here. Keppel Street’s a pretty safe street.
“This type of thing is just a sad indictment on society these days. We’ll get over this incident, but I sure was upset at the time.”
