It is believed the 14 metre helix-shaped turbine will be the first of its kind in the Central West.
It will have five blades made from epoxy/glass fibre with a vertical height of three metres. The wind rotor will be four metres in diameter.
Skillset CEO Ben Bardon said the turbine would complement 160 solar panels installed at the centre.
The Flannery Centre will focus on sustainability, while showcasing green technologies and skills.
“We want to be good corporate citizens by generating our own power requirements and then some,” Mr Bardon said. “It will be quite striking with no appreciable noise. We have found that when the sun isn’t shining, it’s windy.
“It will be particularly useful in winter when there is not a lot of solar gain. The turbine will help us cover our energy needs and should even allow us to put some power back into the grid.”
Mr Bardon said the footings for the turbine were ready to go, so it will only be a matter of weeks before the new turbine is in place.
One of the first public events to be held at the Flannery Centre will take place on April 27 when it hosts a welcome barbecue for Newton’s Nation competitors. Skillset had been a sponsor of the event since it was first held on Mount Panorama.
Mr Bardon said members of the public will be invited to attend and meet the international competitors. He is expecting around 500 people to attend.
The Flannery Centre will open officially on May 25.
