The local branch management committee was dissolved amid accusations of mismanagement and bullying, and executives from the state board convened a crisis meeting in Bathurst in February.

But new branch chair Marea Julian said after taking stock, the branch was now re-invigorated and operating as normal.

Mrs Julian said the branch had 67 members who take around 1500 calls a year to injured and distressed wildlife.

“We have had some feedback that people think WIRES is no longer active in the Central West area, but this is not correct,” she said.

“In fact, we have had renewed offers of help from the public for the donation of properties we are assessing for release sites. We are looking at at least half a dozen new sites to use for releasing eastern grey kangaroos.

“WIRES will always do its best to rescue and care for as many native animals as possible.”

The local WIRES branch will run a rescue and immediate care course in Bathurst on May 21-22 and is looking for new volunteers to join the organisation.

“WIRES is Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organisation,” Mrs Julian said.

“Our mission is to do everything possible to rehabilitate and preserve Australian native wildlife and to inspire others to do the same.

“To that end we would like to invite interested people to our wildlife rescue training course next month. Wildlife care is a very rewarding activity and even if you don’t want to rescue or care for animals, we always need people with administrative or fundraising skills.”
