The woman, a teacher at Carenne Public School, was with a group of students delivering the Western Times.

As she put her foot down where the cement drain meets the grass on the corner of Rankin and Browning streets, her leg disappeared into the drain.

Carenne principal Neil Moon said the children went back to the school to let someone know what had happened.

"One of our staff members had been out with a group of students when she walked into a hole and her foot became stuck," Mr Moon said. "The kids came up to the school to let us know there had been an accident.

"One good thing that came out of it was so many people driving past stopped and helped. The community help was great.

"She was in quite a bit of pain ... but she was more worried about the kids.

"We have just been onto council to let them know there was a hole here covered by grass. They said they would send someone down immediately."

Bathurst Regional Council confirmed they had been notified and the problem was fixed by early afternoon.
