BATHURST: It's not as rural as you think, so come and have a drink.
It may not be the preferred catchline for local tourism promoters, but it could be a powerful lure to bring more medical trainees to our region.
Just days after the Federal Government knocked back a request from Charles Sturt University to support its proposed medical school, the latest crop of medical trainees from another university has released a humorous YouTube clip literally singing the praises of learning in Bathurst.
The University of Western Sydney runs government-funded rural clinical schools in Bathurst and Lismore, giving medicine students a taste of life in a country hospital.
The hope is that having experienced life in a regional centre, some of the students will return to the bush once their training is complete. And it seems to be working.
The latest batch of eight trainees from UWS was so impressed by their time in Bathurst that they produced the six-minute clip to encourage future students to also give Bathurst a chance.
The clip includes a tour of Bathurst Base Hospital and also introduces students to some of the pubs and restaurants around Bathurst, some of the doctors they will learn from and the digs they provided for them in Bathurst.
