Conroy starts scoring spree

20/11/2008 8:23:00 AM
Kristy Conroy has helped the Australian Country side to victory in the 2008 Pacific Cup, beating Fiji 5-1 in the final at the National Hockey Centre in Laucala, Fiji yesterday afternoon.

Conroy’s team went through the competition undefeated with a draw against Fiji in the round robin stage of the competition the only hiccup as they piled on 27 goals and conceding four in just five matches.

Conroy gave the side an early lead when she scored the first goal of the game and the visitors didn’t let up as they scored another two before half-time to go to the break leading 3-1.

They continued to play attacking hockey in the second half and got another three goals including one in the dying minutes to make the full-time score 6-1.

It was the best possible finish for the side with Conroy’s goal giving the Country team the best possible start.

Kristy’s mum Shirley travelled with her to Fiji and watched all of her matches and said the final was a tough encounter.

“The score wasn’t an indication of how close the game was but Australia made the most of their opportunities,” she said.

She said her daughter’s efforts had been great in the final.

“She’s played very well, but then I am biased aren’t I?” Conroy said.

Australian Country qualified for the final by thumping the Canberra Cameos 10-0 with Conroy again playing a big role in the comprehensive win on Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Fiji had to work a lot harder to make it into the final as they just edged out New Zealand 6-5 in their semi-final after trailing 2-0 at half time.

The Country side went into the match as favourites but both teams fancied their chances after their first encounter.

Conroy said her daughter had concentrated more on creating chances than scoring goals.

“Kristy has scored a couple but not a lot. She has set up quite a few. She is playing back a bit and not as much of a striker role, but she has set up a few goals,” Shirley said.

She also said Kristy had found the vice-captains role a challenge.

“She finds it a lot of pressure but she is also learning a lot out of it,” she said.

Conroy and the team opened their Pacific Cup campaign with a tough 4-2 win over the New Zealand Maoris and followed it up with an 8-1 victory over the Canberra Cameos.

Their final group match against Fiji proved to be the toughest with the home side fighting desperately to stay on level terms with the Australian side.

Rain forced the match to be stopped for more than an hour before the teams could resume their battle but neither side could break the deadlock and the game finished as a nil-all draw.

Fiji beat Canberra 2-0 in their opening match of the tournament.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
