Lewis's Lady is chasing a golden feature double

GOLD CROWN

Twelve months ago Lady Euthenia was dominating the Gold Tiara series as a two-year-old and in 2010 she is a chance of becoming just the second filly to win the Gold Tiara-Gold Bracelet double.

She will start her Bracelet campaign in the opening heat today at Bathurst Paceway and from barrier two, she will start as a raging hot favourite to be first filly through to Saturday night's $40,000 final.

"I think she will do pretty well, she handles heats pretty well and I'm pretty happy with the draw, you can't do much better than two," owner-trainer Peter Lewis said.

The three-year-old has only had four starts this season after being spelled between August and December, but after a fourth in her comeback race, she has gone onto to win her next three including the Group One NSW Oaks final at Harold Park in February.

She hasn't raced in the last month because she picked up a cold, but has put that behind her and Lewis is confident she is ready for her latest campaign.

"She has come back really well and it didn't take her long to find form, her first up run was a bit flat but after that she was right," Lewis said.

"She has had a bit of a cold but she is getting over that, if she hadn't picked that up I probably would have given her another run, but she trialled at Menangle and I was really happy with that."

Her comeback fourth at Harold Park was just the third time in 17 starts that she hasn't won and in her 14 race victories she has earned more than $370,000 in prize money.

Before her last spell, the Art Major x Reggae Miss offspring contested the semi-final of the Breeders Crown at Tabcorp Park in Victoria and finished a distant ninth, but Lewis said it was just a bad run.

"She just got a bit keen, it was her first run down there and she got a bit keen and Mitch [Reese, driver] took her to the death seat and she bit down, she'd done it in a trial before but it wasn't a big concern," the Kurrajong Heights trainer said.

"Even the best horses choke down at some stage."

While she is considered favourite for today, Lewis expects Lady Euthenia to get plenty of competition from Steve Turnbull's Zara Rose and the Newcastle horses that will start from the front row.

If she does get through to the Gold Bracelet final, Lewis expects Lady Euthenia to come up against some familiar horses.

"She has raced against a lot of the horses in the fields as a two-year-old. David Jack's Gem Of Reibey should be there and Lilac Stride and Jayne Davies has a good one, Miss Trickin Lombo," he said.

Lewis said he had a fair idea when Lady Euthenia was a yearling that she was going to be a quality filly

"As a yearling when we were breaking her in she had a lot of speed. We would run her with an older horse and she used to do it easy, even against the older horse who was racing, so we had a fair idea although you never know how they are going to turn out," said.

The Gold Bracelet and Gold Chalice heats start today at Bathurst Paceway with Lady Euthenia contesting the opening race of the day at 12.29pm.
