LAST weekend Bathurst Little Athletics competed in the regional championships in Finley. Athletes finishing in the top four of any event qualified to compete in the tate track and field championships later in March, giving them the opportunity to compete against the best young athletes in NSW.
Early on day one the club's middle distance runners Daniel Woods, Georgina Adams and Danielle Pearson all placed in the 800m and 1500m events.
Jessica Fearnley placed in the 1500m and 3000m. All athletes showed great stamina in these demanding events with top four finishes. Kieran Ball topped off the early morning events with a fast finishing third in his 200m hurdle final.
Day one also produced outstanding field event results with Bathurst strong jumpers led by Julia O'Shea who came first in high jump with a personal best jump of 1.67m and Emily Mathews placing first in triple jump also qualifying for the state titles. Highly creditable performances from Jonah Tuineau seventh and ninth in high jump and long jump, Nicholas Adams 12th in long jump, Ainsley Woods fifth in high jump and Sian Grant-Janssen also fifth in high jump rounding out the jumping.
Both days of the carnival were witness to outstanding efforts with Bathurst sprinters always amongst the spoils in the finals. One of Bathurst youngest members, Ben Mathews, finishing with a silver medal in the 70m, Hannah Wardle and Sara Mathews also highly competitive in the 60m hurdle final and Matilda Flood fourth in her 70m final and a qualifier for state. The 100m and 200m sprints saw Laycee Covington-Gorst with two outstanding first places, Caitlin Reeves fifth and sixth in the 100 and 70m finals respectively and Brooke Wardle sixth in both the 100 and 200m finals and a mere seconds from state qualifiers. Chloe Richards also made reserves for both the 100m and 200m finals. In the boys Dean Grant-Janssen placed sixth in the 90m hurdles and seventh in the 100m and Joshua McGrath achieved a much deserved third place in the 100m and fourth in the 200m gaining him a place in the state titles.
The throwing events also produced outstanding results with Bathurst's older athletes in Sam Callum and Carol Prosser moving on to the state event in Shot put and Mark Prosser achieving seventh in shot put and eighth in javelin. Bathurst's younger throwers showed enormous promise with Caitlin Matthews and Madison Tuineau both fifth in discus and shot put, just centimetres from qualification and great efforts in technically demanding events.
Final day action was time for a small group of very committed Bathurst Race walkers to shine with Brianna Adams first, Joshua Small first, Annie and Harry Broad all qualifying for the state championships in March. Cindy McGrath and Emma Brodie both making huge improvements on their PB's in their race walking events showing they will be major contenders` next year.
The carnival finished on a high with Bronze medal results for the senior boys and senior girls 4x100m relay teams up against some high quality competition.
Overall the Bathurst Club and it's athletes achieved an outstanding result with 16 now progressing on to compete at the NSW state Track and field championships later this month and what proved the most successful region carnival for some years.
