Rain, rain go away, so we can race

THE Bathurst PCYC BMX Club will hold their inaugural Spring Cup tonight weather permitting after the meet was put back a seven days on the back of last week’s heavy rain.

Adding to the anticipation for the newest addition to the club’s calendar is the fact that the event will be staged under lights, giving riders a unique opportunity that has not been offered at the Bathurst track before.

“Basically we have done this to try and break things up a little bit and move away from the standard format,” club president Greg Westman said.

“It’s the first time the event has ever been held and we’re hoping for it to become an annual event – fingers crossed with Dubbo and Orange getting their tracks up and running that we’ll be able to hold a three-track series in the future.”

Westman says he expects to get some entrants from other clubs for tonight’s competition and added that there has been plenty of interest from within the Bathurst club itself across all age groups who will each contest a three-race series.

“A lot of the kids are really stoked to be doing the night racing, it is a different event under lights with a totally different atmosphere,” he said.

“The BMX racing in the Olympics gave the sport a big push – our next meet was actually scheduled for September 28 but we added this event in to keep the hype going that was created in Beijing.

“We had a lot of people enquiring about the sport after the Olympics and that is more or less how the Spring Cup evolved.”

Despite the downpour last week which soaked the track, things are expected to be in perfect order for this evening after some housekeeping and there didn’t appear too much wrong with the facilities when Westman and AA Pro and club coach Adam Carey whizzed around it on Wednesday afternoon.

In its third year, the club is expecting the Spring Cup to be one of its biggest events yet and are inviting anyone interested to come and give it a go. Racing will kick-off at 7pm after sign-on starts from 6pm.
