Trainer-driver Steve Turnbull will have two shots at $15,000 when he travels to Penrith for the Barrier One Media P.J. Hall Memorial tonight.
Turnbull’s Lucky Example will come from barrier four while Dancing Goddess has a huge challenge coming from the outside of row two in the 2095 metre race.
The Lagoon trainer said he was confident both starters would run the full distance, but admitted he would need a little bit of luck in order to finish at the front of the pack.
“It [Penrith] is a big challenge and a big step up in grade for both horses,” he said. “It’s going to be very difficult.”
When nominations were announced this week Turnbull was named the driver for both five-year-olds.
However, on Tuesday Turnbull revealed he would jump into the gig of Lucky Xample with talented driver Amanda Turnbull taking control of Dancing Goddess.
“Lucky Xample is the harder of the two to drive. He sometimes can be a bit of a handful,” he said.
“Plus Amanda has already had some success this season with Dancing Goddess and they know each other quiet well. They’re certainly no strangers.”
Of the two starters, Turnbull said Dancing Goddess was the in-form horse at the moment with three wins and two seconds from six starts this season for a total of $14,910 in prize money.
With Amanda in the driving seat, the Trump Casino (USA) x Mandy Rena bay mare has three wins from three starts at Bathurst Paceway.
The last time the pair teamed up was back on August 16 in the Elies Cafe Pace when, on a fast track, Dancing Goddess led the field past the post with Jason Turnbull’s Rileys Road second by two metres and Apollos Prince a further seven metres back with a mile rate of 2.04.07 minutes.
While Dancing Goddess may be the in-form contender, Lucky Xample will have a strong chance after a good draw.
Lucky Xample, the By Xample x Minda Luck bay gelding, has started eight times this season for two wins, three seconds and a third.
His last win came back on October 22 at the Bathurst Paceway, when Turnbull finished just over two metres ahead of Northern Delight and Boltfromthebush in third.
However, tonight at Penrith, Turnbull flagged the two inside runners as the one’s to watch.
“I have a lot of time for the one [Shenaniagan Shannon] and two [Saucy Legend] horses,” he said.
“I have got a lot of time for both those horses.”
The Barrier One Media P.J. Hall Memorial is race six of a nine race meet at Penrith and is scheduled to race at 8.43pm.
