Canucalypso win gives trainer a timely boost

03 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
CANUCALYPSO has earned just the third win of her career after taking out the Alabar Pace (1730 metres) at Bathurst Paceway on Wednesday night, leading from start to finish.

Trained by Gary Seve, the win for the daughter of Armbro Oliver out of Delaware Girl carried some emotional weight after Seve’s mother passed away recently.

It came on the back of a third and second in her two preceeding runs, and driver Emma Turnbull couldn’t have been happier to see the mare give her trainer a timely boost.

“We’d have loved her to win her previous race which came just after Gary lost his mum but she ran a super race all the same to finish second that time around,” Turnbull said.

“She ran just as well today but this time she had a little bit of extra luck and it was nice to see her get the win.”

Starting at $8.10, Canucalypso was well behind Cullens Moose ($1.40 favourite) in the pre-race market. Initially, as the gates folded back, it looked like Cullens Moose would settle right where he needed to be – at the front of the field.

As they settled into the first turn though the favourite galloped, allowing Canucalypso to gain front spot and effectively ending his own campaign as he shot 30 lengths out the back of the field.

With her biggest danger out of the equation Turnbull settled the leader into a relaxed rhythm and he led the field through the first two quarters (30.4, 32.6 seconds) absolutely untroubled.

Paddy Carmody ($109.80) was the only other runner putting on any real pressure as they heard the bell, and continued to press as they headed down the back, completing a third quarter of 30.9s.

Paddy Carmody’s challenge failed though, and having spent most of the race on the pegs and three-back, it was left to Georgiamac ($38.10) to present the final obstacle to Turnbull’s bid for victory.

Though she was tiring, Canucalypso managed to hold on in the run home, defeating Georgiamac by two metres with Sweetsweetlove ($16.30) a further four metres back in third.

The win was the third in 33 starts for Canucalypso.
