WENDY Turnbull mare Truly Miss Terious will be chasing two wins in a row when she lines up in the Get Well Max Dixon Pace tonight at Bathurst Paceway.
The five-year-old, having been in work for more than 15 months, continued her recent form revival with victory in the $9,000 Million Dollar Cam Western Districts Final (2120m) at Dubbo Paceway last Friday night, giving her big claims on tonight’s race.
Trained by Turnbull and driven by her son Jason, mare recorded the seventh win of her 53-start career when she wore down locally-trained gelding Brother Brad ($13.40, Colin Young) in the shadows of the post in the Dubbo run.
She is likely to battle Nathan Hurst’s Galactic Eagle for favouritism tonight but, regardless of how she runs, this time around the mare’s connections can be satisfied with what she achieved on Friday in Dubbo in one of the feature events on the card.
Runners in that race qualified from a series of heats at Bathurst and Parkes, with Truly Miss Terious ($7.40) finishing second in its heat behind the Peter Russo-trained Benazir Bhutto.
But there was no sign of a repeat on Friday night as the Ashlee Siejka-driven mare, which started $7.10, galloped in the score-up and lost all chance in the event but the effort to finish fifth was full of merit,
It was left to Thewesternbelle ($11.70, Bernie Hewitt) to lead the field with Brother Brad eventually working into the position outside the leader.
Jason Turnbull never panicked as other runners made the move three wide and when the opportunity arose rounding the home turn to hook off Brother Brad’s heels, the mare picked up to nail the hometown choice in the shadows of the post and win by a head in a mile rate of 2:01.4.
Stellar Esprit ($6.70, Brad Kelly) finished in third place.
Afterwards Turnbull admitted he had expected to pick up Brother Brad a little easier but paid tribute to his mare, which has missed a place just once in its past 12 starts.
“She’s been in work a while now – about 15 months – but she just seems to be loving it,” he said.
“She’s flying the flag for our stable at the moment and as long as she is happy she will keep winning races.
“This win makes her a C5 runner but we have her in a C3-C4 race at Bathurst on Wednesday night [tonight] which she can still go around in so she should be hard to beat in that and then I would like to try her down at Menangle.
“Even though she didn’t win by far tonight I was pretty confident we would pick up Brother Brad in the straight but he did make us work for it. He put in a good run as well.”
The Get Well Max Dixon Pace will run at 8.10pm tonight.
It will be the fifth of nine races on the program.
