HE’S small, he hates hard tracks and is currently in the paddock as part of a three-month spell, but rivals beware as the 2009 Golden West Race Club’s Horse of the Year Moment of Clarity will be targeting the 2010 Bathurst Cup.
Trainer Sarah Murray-Leslie revealed her intentions on Saturday as she was presented with Moment of Clarity’s trophy, the talent of her six-year-old having her excited at the very thought of another campaign.
“I keep looking at him out in the paddock, I want to bring him back in before Christmas, so he’s coming back in next week and I am pacing him to get to the 2000 metre [Bathurst] Cup,” Murray-Leslie said.
“He’s had three months off, he’s never had that long off before, but the tracks have been hard and he hates it hard. Wet or rain affected or at home he’s alright though.”
In what was a big 2009, Moment of Clarity broke the $100,000 prize money mark as he took his record to 11 wins and 23 placings from 78 starts.
After a come from behind win at his home track in July then victory in open company at Forbes, the Victory Prince x Maximum Storm gelding posted his then biggest career win at Forbes in August.
With Kayla McEwen in the saddle, Moment of Clarity once more sat near the rear of the field before surging home to take out the Forbes Cup.
A month later when lining up in the inaugural Black Nugget Cup, Moment of Clarity got the nod in one of the closest finishes seen at Mudgee despite being rated as a $10.40 chance.
He also produced good runs in the Narromine Gold Cup (fourth) and Dubbo Sky Cup (fifth) without placing in a campaign which saw the tough gelding have over 20 starts.
“He’s tough and he’s tiny and I keep going down to the paddock to see if he’s ignoring his feed,” Murray-Leslie said.
“He’s a midget compared to some of the other horses he races against but he just loves it though. He just swoops them, that is his race, he likes to come from behind.”
While the talent of Moment Of Clarity, who races 10 months of the year, was an obvious factor in his success in 2009, the trainer also praised the efforts of jockey McEwen.
Murray-Leslie is still scratching her head as to how McEwen managed to win the Black Nugget Cup.
“Kayla just rides him so well, she just doesn’t doubt him,” she said.
“Others who have ridden him [Moment of Clarity], they reach the 800 and he’s gone and they suddenly think ‘I have got a horse here’, but they’ve blown it because it’s too late to go at the 800.
“That race at Mudgee which was his second last race before his holiday, 20 metres out there was no way he was going to win that race. I don’t know how she did it, he was carrying plenty of weight and he’s only tiny.”
