Williams Heads North With New Stable

16 Dec, 2009 05:07 PM
She has become an institution in the Bathurst racing industry and now Gayna Williams is expanding her operation to include a stable at a property between Grafton and Casino in the North of NSW.

However, it doesn’t spell the end of her association with Bathurst – Williams and her husband Frank will split their time between the two stables.

“We are intending to keep both stables open and between Frank and I we can operate both,” she said.

“A lot of people think that because we are opening up this stable at Grafton it must mean that we are closing Bathurst, but that certainly isn’t the case.

“We strongly believe that there is a place for the Bathurst stable but having this one just gives us another option.”

Williams has proved to be a very successful trainer in the Central West as well as other tracks around the state and the new stable is aimed at continuing that success.

“It’s being built at the moment and will have 20 boxes as well as a walking machine and and track on the property. It has a swimming pool as well,” she said.

“The property is about 20 kilometres and a 12-minute drive from the Grafton track but [because of our own facilities] we will spend probably 80 per cent of our time at our stables.”

The new property is in a central location and makes it easier for Williams to enter races at the tracks in the northern part of the state.

“We decided to open another stable because it gives our owners more opportunities. It’s quite central [to tracks up north] and it’s just about expanding our operation,” Williams said.

“Frank has been my foreman for 25 years and I am confident that we can make this work. Nothing much will change, it might mean that I’m not at quite as many races [at Bathurst] but Frank will be there.”

In the past 12 months, the Williams Racing Stable has taken out countless major races including the $25,000 Soldiers Saddle with Colour City, the $25,000 Gunnedah Cup with Life’s Too Short and the $25,000 Dubbo Zoo City Cup with Little Britain.

Williams said that her team will still have a heavy presence at all race meetings in the Central West and she has backed that up by nominating five horses for this Saturday’s meeting at Tyers Park including last start winner Lanmix and five-year-old gelding Gold ‘N’ Waters, who is still searching for his first victory.
