Rose plays key role in premiership win

17 Sep, 2009 09:12 AM
FORMER Bathurst Panther Trent Rose has played an integral role in help Wentworthville win their first pemiership in 10 years, the Magpies posting a 24-20 win over Cabramatta in the Bundaberg Red Cup recently.

The talented player, who gained Group 10 junior representation for his efforts with the Panthers, only played 30 minutes in the grand final as a retiring player for the club filled Rose’s regular position in his final game.

However, when Rose was on the ground he made an immediate impact, setting up a try, scoring another and almost finishing off his own chip and chase on the last tackle before being held up on the try line.

The premiership win caps off a good year for Rose, who has also played some NSW Cup games for the Wentworthville club.

“I played for the first five weeks at the start of the season then had an injury, so I have been playing Bundaberg Red Cup in order to get back into firsts. Winning the championship though was a great achievement and playing a key role in the game was also a bonus,” he said.

For Wentworthville it was their first premiership in the new Bundaberg Red (formerly Jim Beam) Cup with the Magpies’ last premiership in the third tier of the NSW Rugby League system coming in 1999 when they won back to back premierships.

Rose is now training with the firsts team squad as Went-worthville is still in contention to win the NSW Cup despite losing to Balmian Ryde Tigers 32-26 in the first week of the finals.

It has been a big month not only for Rose, but his two older brothers as well.

His brother and Manly prop George Rose has had one of his best season’s in the National Rugby League.

The former Sydney Rooster and Bathurst junior played 19 games for the Sea Eagles, scoring four tries and playing a vital role in the forward pack.

His efforts this season have been recognised with him receiving a call-up to the Australia training squad for the rugby league Four Nations Tournament to be held in Great Britain and France. He has also been selected in the the squad for the Prime Minister’s XIII clash with Papua New Guinea on September 27.

George Rose was on the interchange bench last Friday night as Manly was eliminated in the finals series following the 40-12 loss to Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

The eldest of the Rose brothers, Matt, and his team the Gundagai Tigers have qualified for the grand final in the Group 9 Rugby League competition following a 30-18 win over the Wagga Kangaroos last weekend.

Matt Rose, the five-eighth for the Tiger,s scored two tries in a great performance for the club. The first came right on half-time to get Gundagai back within two points of the Kangaroos with his second coming towards the end of the game to ensure Gundagai not only a victory but a home grand final.

For Gundagai it has been a long time between drinks with their last premiership coming in 1983. The Tigers have had a bad run of grand final losses with defeats in 2003, 2004 and 2006 which was their last grand final appearance until this year.

For Trent Rose it has been good seeing his brothers perform so well for their respective clubs

“It’s been unreal it caps off a great year for us,” he said.

“Shame for George that Manly lost but he’s had a good year while it is also good to see Matt qualify for the grand final with Gundagai.”

Matt Rose and the Gundagai Tigers will play off for the grand final in two weeks.
