Bogart runs in record six tries for ’Dogs

21 Jul, 2008 08:42 AM
AN amazing six-try club record haul from flyer Bart Bogart lit up an otherwise scrappy contest in Parkes as the Bulldogs secured a comfortable 52-24 win in Central West Rugby Union action on Saturday.

Incredibly, it would have been seven but for a forward pass ruling in the second half to deny the electrifying winger an extra five-pointer.

The win maintains the Bulldogs’ hold on second spot and kept them in a ‘buffer zone’ of sorts, seven points behind all-conquering defending premiers Dubbo ’Roos and six points clear of dangerous Narromine.

In the process, it also consigned to the hapless Boars to yet another loss and moved them one step closer to a winless season 2008.

After what Bulldogs’ co-coach Michael Burgess described as a frustrating match in which the whistle got more air time than the football, Bogart’s effort was the talk of the town.

As far as anybody could ascertain, his haul broke a club record held by Ben DeWitt and two current St Pat’s rugby league players in Cameron Plummer and Matt Lawson.

Ironically, at almost exactly the same time as Bogart was breaking his record, Lawson was busy planting down three tries of his own against Panthers in Group 10 premier league.

“It wasn’t as though they were simple tries either; with some of them he [Bogart] had to beat a number of defenders to get there,” Burgess said.

“The game was pretty frustrating and we got hammered in the penalties.

“It is hard to build momentum when the opposition has the amount of ball that Parkes had, but all-in-all it was a pretty comfortable performance.”

While Bogart was the obvious stand out for the Bulldogs, Burgess reserved plenty of praise for flankers Adam Dwyer and Jono Cody along with Bogart’s fellow winger in Justin Slattery.

“Justin did some good things even though the ball was generally going in the other direction especially considering it was his first game in the top grade this year,” he said. “We have Narromine next week at home so if we can win there we seal at least second spot and a home semi, and with a game against ’Roos still to come, we can maybe press for the minor premiership.”
