This week’s fifth round of the King Cain Wallabies Triathlon series will be one for budding young athletes with some of the regular senior competitors heading to Orange for the inter-club triathlon round tomorrow.
The club is hoping that there will be a strong turnout for their midget and junior events and Bathurst Tri Club secretary Karen Tuynman said the round won’t count towards the club championship because of the Orange race.
“This round will be fairly junior focused because some of the seniors who want to will go over to Orange for the inter-club event.
“As a result there won’t be any points awarded in our club championship to make it fair,” she said.
“Hopefully we can get a good turnout in the juniors and midget events.”
Registration for tomorrow’s event opens at 7.30am with the mini race the first one at 8.30am. It consists of a 20-metre or 50-metre swim, three kilometre ride and 300-metre run.
The junior race follows at 8:45am and those competitors will undertake a 150-metre swim, six kilometre ride and 1.2 kilometre run.
The senior race is the last event of the day and it starts just after 9am with a 300-metre swim, 17- kilometre ride and 2.5-kilometre run.
Several senior competitors are busy preparing for major triathlons and ironman events at Huskisson and in New Zealand and will be looking to use the event as part of their training.
The 2011-12 season has been an exciting one so far with several different race winners and also varying formats.
Ryan Sargent took out the opening race of the season with a solid show as he began preparations for what is a big year. Nick North took out the second event, which doubled as Bathurst’s hosting round of the inter-club championship.
North has also been a constant threat in the third and fourth rounds of the club titles, posting the quickest times in both of them, although both have been handicap events.
The club’s biggest race of the year is still to come. The Dave Scott and Dave Carroll Memorial race is the final event of the season and is the most prestigious race with every member of the club wanting to win it.
It will be held on March 18 and will be followed by the club’s presentation.
Tomorrow’s race will be sponsored by Inland Building and Construction.
