UP and coming Bathurst duo Sam Hall and Ben Mitchell have given themselves a chance of making the NSW Polding cricket side after advancing through the first round of trials last week.
Hall and Mitchell both play for the Bathurst under 12s district side and were selected as the two nominees from Bathurst to go to Dubbo for the trial.
They joined 76 other children from around the Diocese, and all were put through their paces in a bid to reach the next stage, to be held in February in Newcastle.
Both players are all-rounders but like most cricketers their age, prefer to wield the willow.
“I’m more of a batsman and enjoy it more, but I do bowl as well,” Hall said.
“I’m an all-rounder, I like doing both,” Mitchell echoed.
Having already had their fair share of representative cricket this season courtesy of two of rounds of the Mitchell junior competition, the two players were handpicked from the initial group of 78 contenders after getting through some drills and matches.
“They split us up into six teams so that they could have a look at everyone and out of that they picked a possibles and probables team,” Hall explained.
“After that they narrowed it down to seven players to go to Newcastle in February.
“It is good to get picked to go up there, but we both hope we can get through to the final team as well.”
The local duo have had mixed success so far in their Mitchell seasons, having an easy win over Lithgow in the opening round before Orange managed to chase down their score in round two of the competition.
