Investigators from Chifley Local Area Command have been investigating the suspicious disappearance of Bathurst man, Andrew Russell, under Strike Force Renshaw.
The then 23-year-old was captured on CCTV leaving a newsagency on William Street in Bathurst on June 2, 2009.
This was one of the last confirmed sightings of Mr Russell.
The man has not accessed his bank account or contacted family since then.
Following information received from the public, Strike Force Renshaw investigators attended a business in the Sydney suburb of Pyrmont about 12.15pm yesterday.
A 26-year-old man was arrested at the premises and taken to Surry Hills Police Station, where he was charged with murder.
The man was refused bail and is expected to appear at Central Local Court today.
Investigators have also started a search for Mr Russell’s body in an abandoned mine shaft near Sofala.
“Information provided by the local community has resulted in these developments,” Chifley Local Area Command Acting Crime Manager, Acting Inspector Joel Fawkner, said.
