The former minister in the Howard government says the election can’t come soon enough.
Mr Cobb, who was not surprised by the timing of the election, believes Ms Gillard made the announcement eight months out from the election because she realises she has a lot of ground to make up regarding trust.
“This election offers a clear choice between voting for someone you can trust, common sense and sound financial management, or a government that has lied, wasted and placed a huge debt around our necks,” Mr Cobb said.
The federal member said regional Australia had been more damaged by what Labor had done than anywhere else.
“In 226 days we can correct that,” Mr Cobb said.
“There are no certainties in life or politics and I take nothing for granted, but I would be disappointed for Calare if we don’t keep the seat.”
He said he would also accept the role of Agriculture Minister.
Mr Cobb said he believes this time around the Coalition will have a clear majority.
“We can’t have Australia at the beck and call of the independents,” he said.
He also believes Tony Abbott, who is already campaigning, is the man to lead the party into the election.
“The man’s no fool,” he said.
“It’s true some people don’t like him – he’s a tough man, but then he needs to be.”
Mr Cobb’s campaign in Calare will focus on the cost of living and infrastructure.
“Campaigning is not something you do in five or six weeks. You spend all your time trying to do the right thing,” the sitting member said.
“The cost of living is a huge issue. It has gone up so fast.
“So many small businesses have been affected.
“In Calare one in nine voters runs a small business ... and they are very frightened.
“But this government has upset all business.
“Maybe you can upset small business or big business and get away with it, but not all of them.”
Mr Cobb said he is totally committed to doing something about an expressway over the mountains.
Roadworks and rail will also get his attention.
He also wants to see the future of Bathurst Base Hospital assured and get a private hospital going here.
“We have to ensure that as Bathurst expands we have the ability to improve services,” Mr Cobb said.
“In the long term I will focus on medical services and infrastructure; in the short term it will be the cost of living.
“I can’t bring the election forward the way people want, but I can fight it out.
“There are only 226 days to go. Bring it on.”
