The Perthville Uniting Church’s Brian Cowan, Mark Ryan, Roger Parsons and Ross Burge clean windows, paint, change washers, fix things and do little bits of building work for anybody who needs it.
They charge $20 an hour and all the money goes into the church funds ready to be handed out to worthwhile not-for-profit organisations at the end of the year.
This year they were able to donate $10,000 between Central West Care and Can Assist.
But, like many volunteers, they are getting older and therefore wish to put out a call for some newly retired people who are willing to donate some time to work with the odd jobs team.
Mr Cowan said there must be a number of people out there who are good with their hands – maybe a retired plumber, carpenter, or painter who could help.
“Volunteering is important because it puts something into your life,” Mr Cowan said.
“Helping someone gives you a real buzz.
“Sometimes it means a lot to people just to have someone there to have a cup of tea with after the job is done. There are a lot of lonely people out there.”
Mr Cowan said members of the team also volunteer for other organisations.
Mr Ryan said he also enjoys working as a member of a team.
Doing something that benefits others gives him a great deal of satisfaction. He is also a member of Can Assist.
“We really enjoy it,” he said about the odd jobs team. “It’s a day out. You get together with your friends and do all these odd jobs.”
Members of the team go out into the community one day a week, usually Tuesdays.
Anyone who wants to hire the team, or volunteer their time to help, can call Brian Cowan on 6331 9151.
